Strašno je bilo biti

Moj sabesjednik iz Antihije

nosi ožiljke Korejskog rata,

na licu i duši.

Iz njegove hronike izdvajam riječi,

koje bi pouka mogle biti za sve nas

i mlado pokoljenje.

- I Turska je, kaže, - slala vojnike,

tamo daleko da naprave red

na poluostrvu blistavih šuma.

A mi smo, dolaskom našim,

samo uvećali haos

i broj žrtava, naših i njihovih.

Strašno je bilo biti

u nepoznatom prostoru,

gdje se ne zna sa koje bande

smrt dolazi.

Jedne noći pred zoru

čuo se tutanj gore

kao da se planina raspada.

Za mnoge, od nas, bilo kasno,

kad su stijene satrle naš logor.

Poraženi ratom i retorikom, i oružjem

što dugo nije u upotrebi,

vratili smo se na početnu tačku.

Na linijama razdvajanja

sklopili smo primirje

koje traje pola vijeka i više.

It was terrible to be

(Englich)

My interlocutor from Antioch

bears the scars of the Korean War,

on his face and soul.

From his chronicle I extract the words,

which could be a lesson for all of us

and the generations to come.

Turkey, he says, - also sent soldiers,

far away, to create order

on the peninsula of the gleaming forests.

But we, with our arrival,

only increased the chaos

and the number of victims, ours and theirs.

It was awful to be

in an unknown space,

where you do not know from which side

death is coming.

One night before dawn

a rumble was heard from above

as if the mountain was falling apart.

For many of us, it was too late,

when the rocks crushed our camp

Defeated by war and rhetoric, and weapons

that have long been out of use,

we returned to the starting point.

On the dividing lines

we concluded a truce

that has lasted for half a century and more.
